About Andy MacDonald

Counsellor, Music Therapist, and someone who believes that asking for help is one of the harder — and braver — things a person can do.

Who I work with

I work primarily with men — cis and gender-diverse — who are navigating anger, addiction, anxiety, avoidance, or the kind of emotional distance that makes relationships harder than they need to be. Often these things are connected. Anger that flares up at home. Drinking or other habits that started as a coping strategy. A sense of being stuck without quite knowing why.

I also work with couples — especially where one or both partners is dealing with anger or addiction, where communication has broken down, or where cultural or language differences add another layer. Multicultural and multilingual couples are very welcome.

Sessions are available in English and French. In-person in Westmount on Tuesdays and Thursdays, or online.

How I work

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

For couples, I use EFT to help you understand the cycle you’re stuck in — and shift it. Most relationship conflict is about disconnection, not the surface issue.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

For individuals, IFS helps us understand the different “parts” of you — the part that wants to change, the part that resists, the part that’s protecting something. No part is the enemy.

Motivational Interviewing (MI)

I meet you where you are. If you’re not sure you’re ready to change, that’s fine — we start there. MI helps us explore your own reasons for change without pressure.

Music Therapy

For those who find talk therapy limiting, music opens a different door. No musical experience needed — we might listen, write, or just use music to understand what’s hard to put into words.

My background

I’m a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, and a Certified Music Therapist (MTA) with the Canadian Association of Music Therapists. I hold a Master’s in Music Therapy from Concordia University.

I’ve worked in community mental health, addictions, long-term care, and social service agencies across Montreal and Toronto. My private practice is based in Westmount, at 4631 Rue Sherbrooke Ouest.

I’m also a jazz musician, which shapes how I think about improvisation, presence, and finding your way through something without a fixed script. It’s more relevant to counselling than you might think.
